Coffee enemas are one of the best ways of cleansing the liver, the colon, and speeding up detoxification processes in the body. All toxins must be processed by your liver — a near impossible job in our toxic world. Coffee enemas provide a means for your liver to ‘dump’ its toxic load of chemicals, excess estrogen, and heavy metals into the intestines for elimination. They are especially crucial if you have a chronic illness.

 

Coffee enemas have been used as a healing remedy for the last 100 years. They are particularly well known as part of the cancer treatment protocol with Gerson Therapy. As many cancers are fueled by estrogen, coffee enemas aid the liver in metabolizing estrogen, reducing estrogen levels. The enemas aid the body in detoxing chemicals and heavy metals that are the underlying cause of cancer and most disease. Additionally, coffee enemas can help to relieve pain, nausea, general nervous tension and depression.

How Coffee Enemas Work

Coffee enemas are superior to plain water enemas, as they provide so many more benefits. The theobromine, theophylline, and caffeine in the coffee travel via the rich capillary bed of the rectum into the portal vein, which leads directly to the liver. These substances dilate blood vessels and open up the bile ducts allowing the liver to release bile, which contains toxins.

Doctors at the University of Minnesota showed that coffee administered rectally also stimulates an enzyme system in the liver, which increases glutathione, the master antioxidant in the body, by 600%-700% above normal activity levels. This antioxidant reacts with free radicals (which cause cell damage) in the bloodstream and makes them inert. These neutralized substances become dissolved in the bile, are released through the bile flow from the liver and gallbladder, and are excreted through the intestinal tract. While holding the coffee enema in the colon for 10-15 minutes, the body’s entire blood supply passes through the liver 4-5 times, carrying poisons picked up from the tissues. So the enema acts as a form of dialysis of the blood across the gut wall.

Everything you Never wanted to know about Coffee Enemas

Frequency

Coffee enemas only need to be done daily for few years while you’re detoxing, then can be done occasionally as needed. With Gerson Therapy for cancer and chronic illness, people perform 4-6 coffee enemas every day! Unless you have cancer or are very sick with a chronic illness, I recommend doing a coffee enema whenever there is a need, which can be once a day, once every few days or once a week. If you are healthy, once a week should be sufficient.

Once you start doing coffee enemas, you will know when you need to do another one based on how you feel. I initially did them every day for a couple years to rid my body of excess estrogen, which was affecting my thyroid and weight. Now I only do one when I start getting headaches, constipation, feel a bit nauseous, or simply for regular maintenance — about twice a week or so.

How to Do a Coffee Enema

Step 1 – Materials

  • Buy a 2-quart enema bucket or bag. An enema bucket is so much easier to pour the coffee into and easier clean. Enema bags from the drug store are also made of plastic, which I would avoid. I recommend a medical grade silicone bag if you prefer a bag.
  • Buy your coffee enema coffee. I love PurE Enema Coffee. Coffee enema coffees are different from regular coffee in that they are beige or tan in color. They have properties more appropriate for enemas like more caffeine and palmitic acid, which make the enema more effective. If you don’t get a special enema coffee be sure to only buy organic. Get regular ground coffee that is not instant and not decaffeinated. Many prefer to buy the whole beans and grind their own coffee so the oils and other aspects of the coffee are fresh. Organically grown coffee is best to avoid introducing estrogenic pesticides into your body. Coffee is one of the most heavily sprayed crops.

Step 2 – Preparation of coffee

  • The coffee can be prepared any way you prefer. Prep it in an automatic coffee maker. Make it in a french press. Boil it on the stove.
  • To make on the stove, place 2 to 3 cups of purified water and one to two tablespoons (15-30 ml) of coffee in a saucepan and bring to a boil (or use a coffee maker to percolate the coffee quickly). NOTE: The first time you do a coffee enema, use only 1 teaspoon (5ml), NOT TABLESPOON, of coffee. This is critical because some people are sensitive to caffeine and will feel very jittery on more coffee. After a few enemas, you will see how much coffee you can tolerate comfortably. Ideally, increase to two tablespoons per enema.
  • Let it boil 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and allow it to cool. One or two ice cubes may be added to speed the cooling process. You may make a larger quantity and use it for several enemas.
  • Tricks to speed up cooling the boiled coffee: 1. Boil only a little of the water with the coffee. Once it has boiled, add the rest of the water to the coffee mixture to cool the entire amount down to body temperature. 2. Pour the coffee mixture back and forth several times through the air from one container to another, even from the enema bag/bucket back into a cool pot. This will also cool it much faster. 3. Put the water in the refrigerator or freezer until cooled.
  • Wait until the coffee is about body temperature. Body temperature feels hot when you place your finger in it. If the water is too hot or too cold, retaining the enema will be more difficult.
  • Strain the liquid through a fine strainer or coffee filter paper into a clean bucket or enema bag. Screw on the top of the enema bag.
  • The enema is now ready.

Step 3 – Preparing to take the enema

  • Prep yourself a little bed of towels to lie on in the bathtub or bathroom. I prefer doing them in the bathroom in case you leak or have an accident – easier clean up. You can lie elsewhere when you become better at performing the enemas. I just put towels in the bathtub and relax.
  • If you have not had a bowel movement, take a plain water enema first, before the coffee enema. This will usually clean out the bowel quickly and effectively. For some, they can hold the coffee no matter what and do not need to use water first. Everyone is different.
  • Be sure the plastic hose is pushed or fastened well onto the enema bag and the thin enema tip is attached to the other end.
  • Remove any air from the enema tube the following way. Grasp but do not close the clamp on the hose. Place the tip in the sink. Hold up the enema bag or bucket above the tip until the water begins to flow out. Then close the clamp. This expels any air in the tube. If this air gets in your colon, it will give you the urge to evacuate too soon.
  • Lubricate the enema tip with a small amount of personal lubricant, coconut oil or olive oil.

Step 4 – Taking the enema

  • The position preferred by most people is lying on one’s back on a towel, on the bathroom floor or in the bathtub. If you can’t get on the floor, you can even just sit on the toilet.
  • With the clamp closed, place the enema bag or bucket on the floor next to you, or hang the bag one to three feet above your abdomen. You will likely need to place the bucket well above the tip so that the water can flow out.
  • Insert the tip gently and slowly. Move it around until it goes about an inch or two ( 2-4 cm) inside you.
  • Open the clamp and hold the enema bag about one foot (30 cm) above the abdomen. The water may take a few seconds to begin flowing. If the water does not flow, you may gently squeeze the bag. If you develop a cramp, close the hose clamp, turn from side to side and take a few deep breaths. The cramp will usually pass quickly.
  • Let a bit of water into the bowel. Your first enema will be quick as your bowel is full of feces. Evacuate.
  • Repeat 2-4 times, if needed, until the water starts coming out looking fairly clean, which indicates that the bowel is empty. After that lie down on the back for a few minutes and relax. This will allow the remaining fecal masses (further up in the bowel) to move along the bowel to be expelled.
  • Now you’re ready for the coffee.
  • Let .5-1.5 liters or quarts of coffee into the bowel (or until you can’t take anymore). You only need a half quart or liter, but take as much as you can hold.
  • Close the clamp. You can remove the insertion tip or leave it inserted to relieve gas, which causes the urge to evacuate.
  • RETAIN THE ENEMA FOR 15 MINUTES (less time is okay, but not quite as effective). Changing position also helps to keep the coffee in longer. When there is an urge to empty, turn onto another side, onto the back, stand up or assume a knee and elbow position. Use the time to read a book, meditate, etc. Some people are able to get up and go lie on a towel in bed, instead of on the floor or in the bathtub. Walking around the house with the coffee inside is not recommended. A small number of people are unable to retain even a cup of water for the required 15 minutes. One can start with less coffee in these cases. First timers may have to do three enemas for 5 minutes at a time. Do your best. There seems to be no harm if one wishes to retain the enema longer than 15 minutes.

Step 5 – Finishing up

  • After 15 minutes or so, go to the toilet and empty out the water. It is okay if some water remains inside. If water remains inside, you may be dehydrated.
  • Wash the enema bag and tube thoroughly with soap and water. Run water with hydrogen peroxide through the bucket and hose. Wipe insertion tip with alcohol.
  • The whole procedure takes about one to two hours, so allocate plenty of time for it and have a good book to read. However, if you do them often enough and don’t have a lot of fecal matter to evacuate, you can do a super quick enema in 20 minutes. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time.
  • If you feel out of sorts or a little bloated after the enema, do a little reflexology. Rub the top of the toes of both feet, but particularly the left foot. You can also rub the entire foot, especially any part that is tender. This will often balance out the body’s energies after a coffee retention enema.

Enema Tips

  • Remember, you will do best if you have a bowel movement before doing the coffee enema. When you first take in some coffee, only take in a little to aid in a bowel movement, then procede to doing the full enema.
  • If intestinal gas is a problem, some exercise before the enema may eliminate the gas.
  • It is not essential but is helpful if the coffee fills the entire colon. You can assist by first lying on your right side for 5 minutes, then on your back for 5 minutes, and then on your left side for 5 minutes.
  • If water will not flow around the entire colon, you may gently massage your abdomen.
  • If the enema makes you jittery, reduce the amount of coffee. For instance, use one teaspon, instead of two tablespoons.
  • The enema may lower your blood sugar. If so, eat something just before or after taking the enema. I always find I’m starving after the enema!

Difficulty Holding the Enema

Some people have difficulty holding the enema in the beginning. If you simply can’t seem to retain the enema very long, try these tips:

  • Be patient. Practice makes perfect.
  • You can break the 15 minutes up into 5-minute segments until you can hold the entire 15 minutes.
  • The water may be too hot or too cold. Be sure the water temperature is comfortable.
  • It may help to place a small pillow or rolled up towel under your buttocks so the water flows down hill into your colon.
  • If trouble continues, try reducing the amount of coffee or add 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses to the water.
  • Many find that adding a teaspoon of black strap molasses to the boiling coffee mysteriously aids in retaining the enema.

    Ive tried coffee enemas a few years back and was very skeptical about though i did try. But the experience was horrible. I tried it a few times because i learnt abt the benefits but eventually gave up when I didn’t see any differenc in my well being. A few years after being diagnosed with IBS and experiencing a lot of stress related diseases. Constipation, headache, mouth ulcers, sleeplessness you name it. I decided to hive it another try. This time using a coffee esp made for enemas. I must say, after using it for a few days i have never had any headache! My bowel has improved too. I feel light and can sleep at night.
    Overall, i would recommend coffee enemas to everyone who are overburdened by toxins and feels tired all the time. Coffee enemas are a wonderful detox and has helped me overcome a lot of stress related symptoms.

      I’m so happy you tried again! I have a handful of clients that don’t have good experiences at first. You have to find the right coffee that works for you, the right method. It can take a bit to get the hang of it too. I can tell you from my own experience that it really helps me manage symptoms like headaches, constipation and nausea.

      I think anyone with IBS with constipation should use coffee enemas. IBS with constipation can lead to bowel cancer and it is critical to keep that colon flowing so that toxic fecal matter does not stay in the colon.

      I’m so happy you are experiencing the benefits. I think it can also take someone a while to notice the difference in how they feel after an enema or even food or supplements. It takes time to get in touch with one’s body and notice subtle positive changes.

    Hello,
    I have a question about the coffee enema procedure.
    When I do them fecal matter or bile is released into the tube where the fresh coffee is released. Is this safe? I don’t feel as cleansed when I see this in the tube. I am afraid the fecal matter is just recirculating through my bile ducts and blood stream.

    When I take out the enema, fecal matter comes out of the tube. Is this right?! UGH

      This fecal matter was inside you at one point, so it’s not going to harm you if it goes back in. I would look into getting a douching tip that has small holes so the fecal matter cannot get into the tube. It also glides in easy. I would also be sure to run hydrogen peroxide through the bucket and tube when you are cleaning it to prevent infection.

        Thank you… I am worried because I didn’t have hydrogen peroxide. I rinsed everything with hot water. Do you know the signs of infection? I have been more constipated and have been having foul smelling gas. This is unusual for me.

          Hot water is adequate, but I always like to use alcohol and/or hydrogen peroxide to clean the equipment just to be thorough. You could be more constipated and have foul smelling gas simply because of a gut dysbiosis. It could also be toxins that are brought up by the coffee enemas and eliminated into the bowels. It could be you ate something to which you’re sensitive. It can be any number of things. But it could be from improper cleaning. However, if you rinsed well with hot water, I would not worry too much. Just clean it properly next time.

            Hi Wendy. Just curious about your recommendation for the stainless steel bucket over plastic. Recently had 12 amalgams removed (mercury fillings) and with that being said I would be concerned about any metals from the stainless steel being brought out by the acidic coffee. What are your thoughts? I really want to make sure that I’m detoxing instead of adding it back in with the stainless steel bucket. Thanks.

            I really don’t think there’s any concern with using a stainless steel bucket. The coffee is not so acidic as to erode the metal bucket and leach metals. Usually metals are only a problem if you’re scraping the bucket or cookware with a metal utensil and flakes of the metal are getting into the coffee. Since this isn’t happening you needn’t worry. You’re other option is plastic that has it’s host of issues. Say there is a hypothetical issue with the stainless steel, the benefits of the coffee enemas FAR outweigh any issues you could have with metals from the bucket.

      I don’t think I would do this to a dog. They would not be effective because Fido would not hold in the enema, which is required for it to detox the liver. You can however put Fido on a Mineral Power program. I have yet to do this but I am happy to accommodate you if you wish to put your pooch on a program.     Thank you for all the wisdom you share on your blog! Because of it I felt comfortable trying coffee enema!
    I did one on Monday and again on Wednesday but by Thursday I had a terrible vaginal yeast infection!
    Please let me know your thoughts on this!

      We do have candida in our colon. If you get them often it’s possible that you have a chronic intestinal yeast infection. when I was on the pill I got yeast infections ALL THE TIME. I mean, one every other month. So, if you have a chronic intestinal yeast infection this could be the cause as the bacteria in your guy is reflected in the bacteria in your colon. It’s quite easy for some of the coffee and poo coming out of your colon to get onto your vagina while doing the coffee enema. So, some could have found a new home and grew. Just try to be careful doing them and wash well afterwards. Of course, the two could be unrelated as well. The coffee enemas will kill candida in your intestinal tract so I would keep doing them to resolve any issues of that nature in your colon. The coffee creates an acidic environment temporarily that kills all kinds of critters in there.

    Hi Wendy, I love your website! I have a question about the caffeine in the coffee enemas. I am very sensitive to caffeine, as a child it caused tremors and now it causes severe insomnia and nightmares at low doses. Should I expect the same effect on my body taking caffeine this route? Also, are coffee enemas safe while breastfeeding? Thanks

      YES! You do absorb some of the caffeine, unfortunately. But the caffeine is the mechanism by which the enemas detox you. So, you either must avoid them or try one with very little coffee, perhaps a 1/2 teaspoon to start and see how you react. Do one in the morning, not later, so that it doesn’t keep you up.

      Yes, you can do coffee enemas while breastfeeding. Highly recommended!!

    I would stick with bifidus, which is the main bacteria found in the colon. Don’t add any other probiotics except for that strain into the colon. It could cause problems otherwise. The bacteria in the large intestine are different from the bacteria in the small intestine.
